The OEM part, made by Febi/Bilstein, should slide on as easily as the old one slid off - maybe easier since it isn't corroded. Whatever you bought sounds like it just doesn't fit.
Depending on the mileage, you might also want to look at the tie rod ends. There is a good chance that you will need an alignment after any of the bushing/ball joint/tie rod work, so you might as well do it right the first time.
As long as you are in there, take a look at the rubber swaybar bushings that mount to the frame, and the swaybar endlinks, especially the "doughnuts" at the connection to the control arm. These are probably pretty worn.
