Anders, I’m afraid you are right. Upon measurement (rather than my previous eyeballing) it turns out to be an M6, as you suggest, with 16mm shaft, 8.8 strength, 5mm allen head.

The chewed-up five threads or so by the head further suggest that the remaining fastener(s) in that guide are loose and allow rattle. Yikes!

In retrospect, when I replaced the chain about four years ago, I should have replaced the guides also – or at the very least checked their bolts. Even worse, I kept no notes on the job, so have no recollection on the condition of the guides. Don’t even know if guides are still available for a car this old.

Now I get to do it all over again, and put blue Loctite on the bolts!
