Hello there!

I'm honestly not familiar with the speakers that come in a 96 cd, but i can tell you this.

At some point, you will have to remove the rear speaker plates to install your new speakers, no matter what speakers you buy.

So... i would suggest before you buy another set of new speakers... completely removing the old set, and bringing them with you to the audio store of your choosing, and let THEM pick out the speakers you need.

This way, if they don't fit, you can take all that anger and direct it towards the poor sap working at the audio store! ;)

I'm thinking if they look similar to 6x9's but mysteriously are NOT 6x9's, then they might be 5x7's or even 4'6', if there is such a thing.

Some cars DO have "specialty" size speakers made, and are hard to find...

but in the WORST case scenario, you can fabricate your own mount to mount 6x9's in the stock location. plywood and screws.

I personally cut holes in the rear shelf, and did away completely with the stock mounts. I had a huge subwoofer in the trunk that would make any open rear speakers distort, so i had to make fully enclosed rear speakers.

It sounds great... but it was a P I T A.

I used an old spare shelf so if i ever want to go back to stock, which i won't anytime soon, i can put my old shelf in.

i'll attach a pic.

good luck.
