hello there,
I have a 1990 9000 turbo, and when considering a replacement 5-speed transmission, i read somewhere that saab used the same gearbox from 1990 thru some part of 1993, they might have changed it at some point in 93, however, i was never sure of this. For me i stayed with a 90-92 option, to save myself the hassle of buying a 93 tranny that wouldn't fit.
I would suggest you do the same, only replace with a transmission of your year, unless you and the person you are buying from AND the mechanic who will be doing the labor ALL AGREE that the different year transmission will work.
I was at jak's mobile in north carolina, and i was witness to a problem where some other customer at jak's shop had supplied him with a used transmission from a similar year, that he thought would work, but inu fact they had changed some of the structural mounts on the case of the transmission, and thus altought it was the same tranny, it wouldnt work without major modifications to the transsy, or the car.
so... CHOOSE WISELY
as for shipping these behemoths... i went with palletizing and shrink wrapping.
It cost me $150 to have a complete 1990 9000 turbo engine shipped to me on a pallet from the boston area, to the albany area.
it cost me about $400 to have an engine shipped on a pallet from L.A. to orlando, florida.
these are insured rated of course, for the full ammount of the part too.
pallets are the only way to go. I forgot who the couriers were though.
good luck both of you
