My 1994 CS has a bracket for suspending the motor which is bolted onto the rear of the head at the same end where the motor joins the gearbox. I used a solid piece of hardwood and a eye bolt which I bent to fit. I was able to lift the motor and take all the pressure of the gearbox mount. After having paid to have a cracked sump replaced I didn't want to take the chance of lifting the motor from beneath.

Having undone all the bolts attaching the gearbox to the motor, drive shaft etc I placed a 20 litre plastic paint drum underneath the gearbox and pulled the gearbox onto it and then slid the drum out from underneath the car with the gearbox still on it.

When replacing the gearbox I carefully aligned the clutch plate between the flywheel and pressure plate using the handle of my garage broom which just happened to be almost the same diameter as the driveshaft of the gearbox.

I bought some cheap bolts from the hardware store of the same size and thread as those which are used to bolt the gearbox to the motor. I cut the heads off with a hacksaw and temporarily screwed these into the engine block so they could be used to help align the gearbox when I was putting it back. I used the same paint drum to slide the gearbox into position under the car.

At first I couldn,t get the gearbox to go completely home when I was sliding it along the guide bolts but succeeded when I got my fourteen year old daughter to turn the engine flywheel as I wiggled and pushed on the end of the gearbox.

I would also suggest that you carefully mark all the bolts as you remove the suspension etc. I didn't and relied on my memory and spent much time when reassembling working out which bolt went where.
