That's why there are four wire sensors, with a separate wire brought out for the sensor ground reference. I would have to guess the reason for not doing that and using three wire sensors is simply cost. Grounding through the exhaust just seems like a recipe for failure.
I'll have to measure the resistance on mine to see what the value is, though I'm not having any problems with engine codes.

I tapped into the black signal wire near the O2 sensor and looked at the signal on a scope, and I'm trying to decide if it's worth the trouble replacing. Signal amplitude is 750mV, going from about 50mV to 800mV.
Wit engine speed raised to 2500 RPM, it takes about 3.6 seconds for 10 crosscounts, and which seems normal.
Thing is, when it's at idle, the signal doesn't seem to toggle very rapidly; taking about 7 seconds for 10 crosscounts, and seems to linger at the high level for 1.25 seconds, (duty cycle of 67%) indicating a rich condition.
Seems to me the O2 sensor is working okay, and there may be something else causing this symptom at idle. I rather not go to the trouble of changing the O2 when it doesn't seem to be a problem.

Someone posted about introducing a vacuum leak as a way to get his emissions test to pass; I wonder if something is causing the engine to run rich at idle; maybe leaky injectors or something.
