is measured in lumens, not watts, and it is not affected by color temperature (the Kelvin scale.) When Daniel Stern says it's impossible for a 55 watt bulb to put out 85 watts of light, he's only partially right, because watts aren't a measure of light output at all. Your Skilsaw uses a lot of watts, but doesn't put out any light at all, to my knowledge. However, DS is incorrect in his implication. It is possible for one light source to surpass another in light output (lumens or candlepower) given the same wattage. Fluorescent bulbs surpass incandescents in this way, for example. My feeling is that this fellow wants to sell his own products. If you want to know the real answer, get an old fashioned light meter for photography, install the new "brighter" bulb in one side of your car, block the other side, and measure the light output at an exact distance from the headlight. Maintaining an exact distance, like five feet, is essential as light intensity falls off rapidly with distance. Then repeat, inversely. That will give you the true answer for your own application. Perfect for those with no social life. Happy motoring, one way or the other!
