I eliminated both the center muffler from my '92 9000S, and found that it was a bit louder (nominally) from outside. The real difference was that there was a bit more interior drone to the exhaust note. I personally did not mind this drone, and even my auto-ignorant ex didn't have anything to complain about. There was a noticable improvement in acceleration, and a slight improvement in throttle response - not any real difference in milage, however. Personally, I was glad I got rid of the center piece. On my turbocharged models ('90 900 SPG, '95 9000 Aero, '90 740 Volvo wagon - all five-speeds), I've found that you can easily eliminate both center and rear mufflers, and still have a very livable exhaust note. The turbo does a great deal of muffling on its own.
