Maybe I have missed something. In Australia your insurance company would negotiate with the other parties insurance company in settling the respective claims. I presume you were insured.
It would seem the charge you have been summonsed for is a ploy to deny liability. I would try to have the charge preferred by the Police dealt with first which would make it difficult for the opposing party to prove their charge when they have been convicted of a traffic offence arising from the same incident. You were need to plead 'not guilty' to the charge preferred against you and seek a lenghty remands before the matter is heard. You could do this yourself without using a lawyer although it would involve time appearing in court.
Do you know any police officers? It would be good if you could quietly discuss the case with an officer familiar with traffic matters. Obviously they did not consider you had committed an offence when they charged the other party.
In the mean time I would take photographs of the damage to both vehicles if possible and photographs of the scene. I would also make detailed notes of everything you can remember about the incident and your conversation with the other party at the scene.
