The VR is held in place by 2 philips head screws (see picture). I replaced the VR on my '94 non-turbo without removing the intake manifold, but it's not easy. Removing is simple, but installing is much harder as you work against the tension of the spring loaded brushes. You will have to work mostly by touch. As Yaofeng said, removing the false bulkhead helps. It is possible to reach the screws from the drivers side with a very long screwdriver or use a short stubby screwdriver and work between the alternator and the bulkhed (this works for slender hands) from the passenger side. One problem is the thick stiff red cable that runs from the alternator to the battery - it's in the way (see picture). I found that disconnecting the cable by the 10mm nut makes access much easier.
Of course by removing the manifold, you have easy and clear access to the VR, but it's a tedious job with a few very stubborn Torx bolts to remove.
A tip for installing the VR: use duct tape to hold the VR in position on the alternator so your hand are free.
