Transmission trouble

I have a ‘93 9000 CS. The other day while attempting to shift up to 4th, it was as if I had shifted into neutral, then it wouldn’t go into 5th and then 1st and 2nd were unavailable. 3rd was the only gear left and it wouldn’t let me shift out of it.
I got it home in 3rd, and left it figuring it needed a new transmission, but after a couple of days I tried driving it again and got it into 1st, 2nd, and reverse with no problem, but when I tried to shift up to 3rd it stayed in 2nd but the stick was in 3rd’s position. The shifter coupling looks intact.
How serious is this? Does this mean that I have to get a transmission or is there a simpler fix? Does anyone know what is happening in the transmission?
Thanks,
Laura
