Turn the steering wheel back and forth a few turns, and listen carefully for a 'click' from right behind the wheel. If you hear a click, then chances are it's the 'clock spring' that makes electrical contact between the airbag and the rest of the circuitry. The spring isn't very expensive, but you'll need to go to a dealer to have the work done - I don't recommend anyone do their own airbag work.
However, if it isn't the clock spring, it could be a number of things - as Daren says, a bad sensor, etc. Again, as much as I hate to say it, bring it to a dealer to read the codes and diagnose the system.
As Daren says, try and locate the noise with a piece of hose, one end held to your ear. I like a coupe of feet of old garden hose, or a heater hose - something an inch or so in diameter. A rattle from the valve cover can be a sticky lifter - an oil change can help a lot. It could also be a worn serpentine belt, bad idler and/or tensioner pulley, drifting main pulley, an air leak, a bunch of things. Can't be more specific with the noise you give. Sorry.
Cranking - The DI doesn't have anything to do with engine cranking speed. A sign of a DI on the way out would be the engine missing at idle or at speed. A sign of a bad DI is the engine not running.
If the engine doesn't crank fast, remove the battery cables and clean the insides of the clamps and the outsides of the posts. Obviously, if the battery is old, it will crank slowly. Check the EDU display - when you start the car, what is the starting voltage displayed? This isn't an exact science, as 'normal' varies from car to car. But if you see a voltage as low as the high 8 volt/mid 9 volts, or if you see the dash lights flash as the engine cranks, that's a sign of a weak battery. When the car is running, and you're driving down the road, the EDU should be displaying voltages in the mid 13 volt range - if you see voltages in the 12 volt range as you're driving (idle is different), then the voltage regualator in the alternator may need replacement.
