Problem is that I couldn't crank and listen for the buzz at the same time, so I couldn't check that too easily where I was. The hatch was a bit loaded down, so that added another layer of insulation to the sounds.

I was going to try a quick squirt of carb cleaner or starting fluid into the intake and see if I get any action, as a means of checking the fuel system. If it looks like it runs up from the added fuel, I'll open up the port for the fuel pump and check it for sounds and make sure I'm getting power to it while cranking.
If it is, I'll assume the crank position sensor is okay, and pop off the DI, stick in a set of spare plugs, ground them to the battery using some guy wire, and see if I get spark.
If no spark, I'll swap in the DI from another car to see if that's it.

If I don't get any fuel pump power, making the crank sensor a possible culprit, what's the best way to verify its operation? I have a full complement of test equipment to check it, so I just need to get info on what the nature of a good sensor signal is as far as amplitude and waveform, as well as the easiest way to tap in to it. I saw a few posts indicating the connector is right by the DI connector, so I'll look around there if it comes to that.
