Working way too hard here Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: changing auto transmission fluid...a question or 2, Jason, Wed, 12 Jan 2005 20:59:43 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
If you really, truly have an automatic transmission, there is most definately a drain plug. It's the MANUAL transmission cars where drain plugs came and went with the whim of the designers.
peek underneath the car from the front, looking back. On the bottom of the transmission, first look for a circular metal plate, around 2 inches in diameter, held on with three bolts. That's the fluid filter. Look farther back, and you'll see a flange. Facing forward, at the bottom of that flange, you'll see a bolt head. I'm pretty sure it's an allen head - not a standard hex bolt - it's the 'different' one. That's the drain plug.
Remove the drain plug, and the fluid will come out. Then remove the three bolts holding on the cover plate for the filter. Remove the plate - requires a little coaxing, as there is a rubber o-ring that holds it in place. SOme fluid will come out. Pull the filter down with a needle-nose pliers. It also has an 0-ring that holds it snugly. On the metal plate you'll find a black rectangle, which is a magnet. Clean the magnet off with a lint-free cloth. It's normal for it to have a shiny slugde on it - fine metal particles. Large chunks of metal isn't a good sign.
Some folks simply clean the filter - it's just a metal screen - and put it back. I replace it, simply because the kit comes with fresh o-rings. Your choice. Just note that sometimes the kit comes with one extra o-ring - don't go nuts trying to find a place for it!
Replace the filter and drain plug. You refill through the dipstick hole. This takes quite a while, as the fluid is thick and the hole is small. I use the end of a plastic turkey baster - the tip fits well into the tube. I then stick a bigger funnel on the turkey baster tube.
AGAIN NOTE- the drain plug does NOT allow you to drain all the fluid - about half is still stuck in the torque converter, and won't come out unless you diassemble the tranny. A bit extreme for a drain-and-fill. So don't put in the full 6 quarts or whaterever listed. I actually measure how much comes out. I don't remember off the top of my head, but it's only about 2-3 quarts. So if you dump the full listed capacity of the tranny in, it'll start coming out every available hole before you're done.
So how do you get all the fluid changed? The best approach is to change the fluid, drive for a week or so, and do it again. After 2-3 changes, you've gotten most of the fluid. If you change the fluid every 15K miles or so as recommended, I just change it once.
