Feeling tense? Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Fri, 14 Jan 2005 08:44:19 In Reply to: squueeaaal! squueeaaal! goes my car., 88_9000s_nonTurbo, Fri, 14 Jan 2005 08:08:36 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The '88 has the dual belt setup, and the belt is manually tensioned. The first thing I noticed was that the squeal went away, and now is back. Did you re-tension the belt? I believe the manual somewhere says to re-tension the belt after a few hundred miles. My guess is that the belt needs tensioning.
The bad news is that squealing indicates belt slipping, and that can glaze the surface of the belt. I don't think belt dressing helps with that. So the belt may be a bit more slippery now.
At a minimum, re-tension the belt. The bad part about the manual tensioner is how much tension is correct? Again, the manual doesn't help much - I believe that it says that the belt should deflect about 1/4 - 1/2 inch when depressed at the mid-point of the long run (at the top) with 'moderate' pressure. Moderate for whom? An 8 year old girl or a WWF wrestler? In your case, I suspect more tension is required. In general, I tension the hell out of the belt. Too much tension wears pulley bearings faster; too loose is slipping. You need to err more to the tense side.
In general, I set the belt to about what I think is right, then make it a little tighter.
