you may already know this, but just draining fluid from drain plug won't get it all out, only 50%, so you have to change several times to approach clean fluid.
if he did change it all, you could always try lucas trans fix
todays trans fluid, i think, is thinner than original recommended fluid
lucas trans fluid is thick, and is supposed to restore seals
i know very little about transmissions, but it came recommended by a friend of mine who used it to improve the trans in his 71 mercedes
i put some in my trans when i got my 93 cse (fluid was black, thin like water, and the trans was slipping somewhat). i did 4 changes.
first change i put in some trans cleaner/treatment with the trans oil, second change 100% regular trans oil (i also had some metal fragments with this change, though could have been left over from supposedly being rebuilt (never got receipt),and third change just regular auto trans fluid, and the fourth i did 75% trans fluid, 25% lucas trans fix
lucas trans fluid is so thick you have to leave the bottle for awhile to let it drain out.
as of 5 minutes ago the trans is working beautifully, so much so i'm amazed sometimes how well designed it is.
i can't see the lucas trans fix harming your transmission, especially as its one that you may toss out anyway
so if you're facing spending $1500 and up, try a $6 bottle of trans fix, you should be able to add to your present fluid without draining, if i recall correctly
if it doesn't work, not much lost
gives you an opportunity to have some fun manual shifting your trans without feeling guilty about it until you replace it
