This tool will do the job without breaking any of the tabs.
Prior owner of my car broke almost all the tabs using some brute force method like hammering on the tabs, but this tool worked to remove the old ring, even though there were no opposing tabs left, because it engages all the splines at once, rather than just two opposite ones. Luckily I already had the tool fabricated from a prior job- :)
