I recently went through a similar problem. In my case, the key would turn but nothing happened. I was unable to lift the unlocking mechanism inside the car...hence the door was locked and shut and I could not open it. Are you able to unlock the door from the inside? If not, you may be in the same boat I was.
I had to remove some of the interior trim on the pillar between the front and rear driver side doors. Then I removed all bolts holding the interior door panel on and removed the door panel. I was then able to wriggle my arm inside the door and with the help of a screwdriver I popped the lock from the inside.
I found that attached to the back of the lock cylinder is a metal plate that has a ball sticking out from the back of it (towards the interior of the car). Attached to this ball is a metal rod with a plastic socket on the end. The other end of this rod is ball-and-socketed to the actual lock mechanism. In my situation, the ball on the back of the lock cylinder had broken off...this accounted for the turning of the key and nothing happening. To complicate matters, the metal rod had fallen over and wedged itself against some other piece of metal...this accounted for not being able to unlock the door from the inside.
I had no idea how to fix the broken off ball nor how to even get the door handle/lock cylinder off of the car. I broke down and took it to my local indie. Two hours of labor later and a $6 part fixed the problem. It looks like the new part is made of brass so I'm hoping that it might hold up a little better.
This might not be exactly what your problem is but if you are unable to move the lock mechanism from the inside or the outside, I would begin with getting the interior door panel off and see what you're looking at. If you have access to a slim-jim or can get AAA or some other auto service out to your car, it may be worth a shot.
Good luck,
Chris
