snow related steering column problems ?

Hello, My son drove our 89t 2 hrs in snow with below zero temps and later said the steering was acting funny. OK going straight , but difficult initially turning the wheel. I looked at it the next morning and the area behind the front wheels were solid snow/ice , right up to the wheel. He also said there was noise from the steering column. I knocked off the ice and it steered fine but the noise persisted. I think the extra force he used on the wheel caused the steering column bushing to fail(probably was ready to fail soon).I tightened the 17mm nut in the column but still have the noise. I started to pull the wheel , but one of the screws holding the airbag wouldn't budge , so the bushing will have to wait until the weather warms. No binding in the steering just that plastic noise. If there is a lesson here it must be to keep the wheel wells free of ice. Thanks , bj
