...this sounds like a bad hooter valve. Classic symptom of a dead or dying one is sputtering/stalling at deceleration, a consequence of the shock wave created when the throttle closes. All that pressurized air from the compressor side of the turbo has to escape somewhere (via the hooter valve). If it can't because the valve doesn't open, the shock wave travels back to the compressor and stops or reverses it, in turn causing the impeller in the exhaust side to produce big-time back pressure in the exhaust -- thus, stuttering and/or stalling.
Perhaps it's as simple as that, and it's only because you didn't hook up the vacuum line correctly, or the valve itself is a bum part. Other than that I can only speculate, but if as it sounds from your description you have TCS on your car, then the idle is controlled by the throttle body, and you could have a problem somewhere in that system.
