I'm assuming that the part that broke is the 'flapper' part that you squeeze. That flapper has two thin arms at the top, and one pulls up on the latch mechanism; the other is just a hinge. I've found that age and road salt corrodes the aluminum of the flapper.
I don't recommend a junk yard, not unless you can be sure the car came from a non-corrosion area. Mine broke a few years back (on an '88) - I replaced it with a new one from the dealer. Not cheap, but well, there it is. In order to replace it, open the hatch, and remove the fabric-covered panel. With some disassembly, you can remove the entire flapper-release assembly from inside the car. Takes a little wiggling, but it works.
