I pulled a MacGyver Posted by Joe [Email] ![]() ![]() |
It is about 10F degrees in Pa. right now and my blower fan decided that 82K was a long enough life and pulled the plug. I could not drive the car because the wind shield kept freezing up. I went on the net and found that Saab wants $260 for the part, everybody else wants $110-120 for the part. But, behold eeuroparts comes through with $64 delivered!!! Yeh! They are all the same part # and made by Bosch. Offly nice of Saab to mark theirs up so high.
Anyway, back to the MacGyer part of my story. The big question: "How do I drive my car for the next week or so until I get the motor and brave the cold to put it in?" Obviously, I need air flow through the heater eliment and to the wind shield. It might even be nice to have some heat turned my way aswell. What pops into my head is that I have a good quality 4" RV 12V 5amp blower motor. Could that move the air properly placed?
This is how I did it: I hooked a lighter adapter and and ran it through a 5 amp fuse. I located the blower motor under the driver's seat and took a long thick plastic back that a pair of socks came in and plumbed the blower moter to one of the rear foot blower tubes. I assumed that the air that it pumped into the rear driver's side foot tube would just come out the passenger's rear foot tube. I was right. I plugged that up with another plastic bag and a few more zip ties. I zip tied screen over the inlet of the blower motor so that I did not vacume up a McDonald's bag or something, ofcourse.
So I gave it a shot. Warm air blew up the window slots when I put the controls on "foot/windshield." Warm air blew out the dash when I put the controls on "foot/dash." Unfortunately there was no way to get the air up the foot tube and then back down to foot tube. That warm pair of socks that I robbed the plastic bag from should do the trick there. Do I deserve my own TV show?
