You didn't mention if you had the TCS CTRL light glowing at you, a sure sign you're in limp home mode. However, from the sound of it, sounds like the limp home cable has fallen off, either at the throttle body (easy fix) or the pedal itself (groan).
Not unheard of for the cable to pop off at the TB -- there's a special little clip that holds it on there that could have come off or perhaps rusted away. Take a look at the TB and you'll see a little lever sticking out there, with a hole in it. You should also notice a short length of cable with a 90 degree hook on it. I'm thinking this came out of that hole in the lever.
The pedal pot commands the TB opening electronically, but it's the limp home cable that actually pulls the pedal back up (that's why it's so bloody hard to press the pedal when in limp home mode).
Let us know what you find out!
