In the past I had a car that would produce a pretty loud pop when turning the wheel. It turned out to be a slightly loose steering rack mounting bolt. The rack bolts to the frame, and if a bolt is even a little loose, as you turn the wheel, the rack can move a little, producing a loud pop. I suspect it would actually get quieter if the bolt was really loose.
Getting to the bolts is a pain - you need to get under the car, and you might be able to access it from above with long arms and even longer extensions. But try tightening down those bolts.
