Plugs? DI? Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Car Problem Please Help, Ravins 9K-T, Fri, 28 Jan 2005 20:25:33 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Without more info, I'll go with ignition, and with your year car, that's plugs or DI. How old are the spark plugs? What are the plug gaps? at 2500 rpm, you're starting to get some boost, and under boost, it's harder to make a spark. Too big a plug gap, and the spark won't jump, giving you hesistation and sputter.
Plugs are cheap and easy to check. As plugs age, the gap usually gets bigger. And, by the way, too big a gap can kill the DI.
Next, and not so easy to check, is the DI (Direct Ignition) cassette. Unfortunately, they do die. And the symptoms you cite are some that you find with a dying DI. And some DI's just quit. One way to check is to remove the DI (It's the thing on top of the spark plugs). Flip it over and remove the plastic cover - it has a bunch of torx screws holding it in place. Inside you'll see four cylinders - the coils. Do you see an oily liquid leaking out? Hold it up to a bright light - each coil should be at least 90% full of liquid. If one or more is low on oil, that's the issue. Do you see or smell burning on the circuit board?
It's very possible to have a dying DI without seeing leaking coils, or burn marks on the circuit board or the tip of the coil. But it doesn't cost anything to look. And make sure that the little spring in the boot that connects the end of the coil to the spark plug is properly seated. If the spring is burned-looking, or you see burn marks on the spark plugs, then you were losing spark because of a bad spring connection.
A new DI costs about $300. sorry about that. You can often find them for less money on eBay. They might even work -some folks have had good luck there.
