If you're lucky, the coupler on your shift linkage failed and put you into a forward gear after popping out of reverse. If you're not familar with it, it's a rubber connector with two pair of studs that connects the shaft coming out of the transmission to the rest of the shift linkage. Given your symptoms, it should be obvious if it failed. It's a cheap part. You can do an emergency repair with a couple of zip ties or hose clamps. If that's not it, you've got internal transmission damage.
