A crack would let air in, and air contains oxygen. So the O2 sensor would see more oxygen in the exhaust than the combustion process is actually providing. This means that the O2 sensor thinks the exhaust is lean, so it tells the ECU to richen the mixture - black plugs and lousy mileage. And if enough air is getting in, the O2 sensor will be still reading lean, even with the extra richening of the mixture. So at that point, the ECU decides that the O2 sensor is bad (I gave you the fuel that you asked for!), so it lights a CEL.
