Actually, I thought the white heater wires were isolated from the sensor, and it didn't matter what order you hooked them up to.
So it actually made a difference in your sensor? I'll have to take a closer look at the generic sensor I was going to swap in. I was planning to do it the same way you described, splicing in a connector down near the sensor location; I'll have to see if I can find a junkyard donor for the connector.
