If you don't have 4th gear ... (4 forward + 1 reverse)
It is possible that your transmission is repairable in-car (which is much, much cheaper).
If not, it is likely on its way out, especially if you continue to drive it.
Check the link below, and click "enter", then "Technical Documents", then "Transmission". Look for a flow chart regarding the automatic transmission diagnosis.
Step #1: Change your fluid! If it is brown and smells burnt, that's not a good sign. It should be pink and fairly clear. However, fluid condition has a huge impact on how well the transmission performs. After all, these transmissions work through fluid pressure, valves, etc. There's no electronics. If the fluid operates in a different way than it is supposed to, obviously the transmission won't work correctly.
