The key to doing lower mounts is to take your time, and not try and skip steps. Quasi's writeup is quite good. The trick of dropping the subframe works very well, and provides plenty of clearance on the rear mount. It sounds scary - you figure the engine will drop out. In fact, removing the subframe bolts seems to do very little. You actually have to lever the subframe down (crowbar helps). I recommend keeping couple of pieces of 2x4 around - maybe 6-8 inches long. Pry the subframe down, and stick the 2x4 in to keep it in place.
Of course, this is done with the car jacked and supported, with the fender inner-liner out. That 20 minutes to remove the liner (at most) is well worth the work.
