A cracked Engine block is unlikely, unless you let her freeze up due to diluted antifreeze ,from just adding water because on the leak, and cold weather. Most likely the leak is the gasket between water pump and block,as you said. The engine is knock is something else, have you tried a straight weight 40 oil rather than a multi grade oil?
To confirm a rod knock, you got to lift the ignition assembly off the valve cover, and make up 4 spark plug leads from the spark plugs to,up inside the towers on the ignition cassette(don't use spark plug boots down on the wires at the spark plugs, you will be using the metal tabs that grip the plug to short out the spark during the test).
Start the engine and allow it to warm up.Then with a wire attached to ground on one end, touch the other end to the metal tab-shorting that cylinder out.A bad connecting rod bearing will quite down when the spark is shorted out to that cylinder.
