Something really bizzare happened today. I turned right on to a street driving my '92 9000S and I lost control of the car and felt the front left side of the car collapse. My wife freaked (and I did too obviously)! The car came to a dead stand still in the middle of the road, with traffic coming behind us. She got out of the car to see what happened, and I could not get out!!!! The driver's side door only opened up about 6 inches.
When I finally got out and could not believe what I was seeing. My front driver's side tire was tucked and pushed against the inner fender. The fender pushed into the driver's door. The fender is rolled on the edge where it meets the door.
Upon a further look, I could see the axle was just dangling and some fluid had spilt on the road. Luckily I was right in front of a gas station that had a jack. I had them jack the front so the tires were off the ground and we pushed it into the gas station.
What just happened!!!!!!!! Did the axle just pop out where it goes in the tranny? I had the car towed to a mechanic (I do all my own work, but recently moved and don't have a house right now with a garage, stuck in an apartment for another 3 months).
Do I just need a new axle (and some body work, of course)? The car has 166K miles and I am in the process of selling the thing. Now this happens. Do I just buy an axle shaft from eeuroparts.com and go from there, or has something similar happened to anyone else?
Any help/suggestions/recommendations would be HIGHLY APPRECIATED!!
Thank you and sorry for the long post.
