I agree with Michael, speed-pressure related items like oil and fuel do come to mind.
However, I would do an inspection of the belt and pulleys. At idle, does the belt ride in the center of the idler pulley, or off to one side? It should run in the middle; off to one side can be the sign of blown pulley bearings or a bad harmonic balancer.
Also look for wear on the sides of the belt, or rubber shavings, especially around the bracket for the tensioner pulley. That would be signs of an off-track belt.
The other thing to look at it the tensioner shock. At idle, it's OK to jiggle a little, on the order of 1/8 inch or so. It shouldn't be wildly bouncing around. When the A/C engages, the pulley should move smoothly and quickly to a new position, and resume the same limited jiggling there. It shouldn't overshoot wildly past the new position, and only slowly settle in.
A blown tensioner shock could cause the belt to thrash around, and the belt hitting things could cause the noise. At higher engine speeds, the load on the belt is different, and that will compress the tensioner some, and the extra force from the compressed spring hold things in place.
