The way you state it makes me think it happens all the time. Does it start in the end or are you stuck? And if so, does it always catch briefly or did it stop doing that after a couple of times?
If the fuel pump is bust, The fuel rail will be dry after a couple of starts. After that, the engine will not catch at all.
IF you keep the key in the start position, does the engine keep running? If so, it looks like the car does not maintain running voltage once the key goes back into drive position.
AS for the fuel pump: yes, it is (very) expensive, so make sure you have 12v at the pump while cranking. Best ask someone else to try to start the car while you have a voltmeter on the wires of the pump and check for a whirring sound indicating it works.
