If the boot is badly ripped and the joint dirty (and lacking grease), I would drive the car as little as possible, and at slow speeds. I'd avoid the highway, where if something goes bad, it'll go bad quickly (and unpleasantly). If the dry bearing overheats, it could sieze or come loose. Speed is heat, and heat is the killer.
The joint may not give you much warning.
