there are some other things.
Typically, a leaky heater core will cause the passenger footwell to be wet, and cause misting on the windshield. Of course, those condition come from a pretty bad leak.
I recently had coolant smell in the cabin (91 9000S) due to a cooling system leak on the driver's side of the cylinder head. Not sure EXACTLY which component was leaking (but they were all due for replacement), but I replaced both hoses from the heater core and the thermostat (with new gasket).
Coolant was leaking out of the cylinder head and onto the top of the transmission. It gets pretty hot in there, so it became coolant vapor, which then got blown into the passenger compartment through the air vents, and straight to my nose. Another signal was that at a stop, I would have white smoke/steam coming out from under the hood.
After new parts, everything is back to normal. Now, if only all the little cuts on my forearm will heal (from the heater core hoses)! Boy, those things are really hard to get to!
