After the car sat idling for 20 minutes, and the temp went up and down, the 'check engine' light came on (as it does when the car sits and idles for extended periods). They pulled the code and said the o2 sensor heater wasn't working - then recommended a new alternator. If the engine is hot already, why would the sensor even need to come on? I was under the impression that the heater came on for the first couple minutes after the car was started... then wasn't necessary as the car reached operating temp. ??
