Well, it burns gasoline (or diesel) to heat the engine coolant. When the engine is warm enough the system starts the (vehicles own) heater motor and warms the cabin. Mine is 4.6kW (compared to 500W electric engine block heaters) and needs only 20-40 minutes to heat the engine to normal operating temp and the cabin too. Clears all windows too. No condensation problems if you do not leave the heater on recirc. On the ACC I/II you must remember to switch the defroster on and leave the temp on full heat before you shut the engine down the night before.

They are pretty expensive (1.5-3k$ here), but work absolutely great. They even switch off after 45 minutes (not to drain the battery) and come with a digital timer. A remote radio control is also available.

The relatively deep discharge cycle will kill a normal SLI battery in a year or two - but so what? An Optima Yellow Top would be great but the cost is pretty high.
