Fuel overflows, then OK

I got gas this AM, and had been running on fumes (yeah, I know it's not good for the pump, but it happens). Anyway, I started to pump the gas, and almost right away fuel was overflowing back out the filler neck. I stopped pumping. Tried again, same thing. I waited a minute tried again, making sure I really pushed the vapor recovery bellows down on the filler neck. Then is was OK.
Never had this happen in any car. Am wondering if one of the valves in the tank or filler neck was sucked closed because I had run so low on gas. I didn't hear any whooshing noise or air escaping or going into the tank at any point, but then I really wasn't listening for one. Once I got driving again there was a gas fume smell, but I only drove a mile or so so I don't know if it'll be gone later. We'll see!
Wonder if had anything to do with temperature? Temp was about 6 degrees.
Any thoughts on this out there?
Thanks!
Noel
