The TCS on auto is very different indeed. It even has a different name: ASR.
temporary disabling goes as per the user manual: lightly press the brake (just until the brake light goes on) while accelerating. So in fact left-foot braking.
Even driving agressively did never activate the TCS on my 1992 CSE (stock 200hp), unless on a wet, uneven road with worn tires. highway acceleration was issue at all. I think you can easily put 30 or 40 more HP on the car with no ill effect. Just don't forget to get the best tires you can get. And maintain your slushbox properly. And anyway, Saab's stance on the subject is that you get traction problems with a 230+ hp FWD, anyway. TCS or not.
cheers
