Not a bad job Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Installing mufflers, Bruce, Tue, 1 Mar 2005 22:39:41 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I always replace the exhaust system starting at the catalytic converter flange back. Just easier that way. I find that if I jack up and support the left rear, I've got enough room, but I'm a small guy. Jacking up and supporting the left side, front and rear, would work well, too, or both sides of the rear.
I remove the left rear tire, and use a sawzall to cut the exhaust pipe where it goes over the rear axle. I hate futzing with bolts. That removes the rear muffler section. Support the mid-muffler with a box.
Then remove the two bolts where it joins the Cat. Since mufflers usually aren't an emergency procedure, about a week before I'm going to do the job, I spray the studs/nuts with some pentrating oil. I like to do it about twice a day. Yes, I'll burn off and smell a little. But by the time I get to do the job, the nuts are pretty compliant. In a few cases the nuts have rounded, so having a Nut Splitter on hand is helpful. Once the studs broke off, but that was no big deal - drill them out and replace with stainless steel bolts and nuts. I always use anti-sieze on the bolts/nuts, and that helps the next time.
If the bolts come off OK, it's about an hour job, including getting the car jacked up. Just cutting the old exhaust off works well.
