It tells the ECU where the throttle is. In earlier years (pre-91), it was just a switch for idle position and Wide Open Throttle (WOT). In the newer years, yours included, it was a potentiometer. It still pretty much tells the same info - is the throttle closed (idle), and WOT. But with the potentiometer, there is better error checking.
Have you tried cleaning the throttle body? Pull the big hose off and look in at the butterfly. Clean that area with carb cleaner and a good lint-free cloth.
The other thing that comes to mind is vacuum leaks. I've never seen a car without a few - just finding one means that you've missed others.
There isn't an air temp sensor for sale, because I don't believe that the N/A gets an air temp sensor.
