The first question would be, what will you replace it with?
Figure that the car is pretty close to completely depreciated - figure it would sell for about $2K. Figure that if you fix it, it'll be worth $2.5K. That's OK - it's a transport vehicle, not an investment vehicle.
Sell the car (get minmal for it) - what will you replace it with? Will you look for another car in the $2-$3K range? If so, keep this guy and fix it. Any car you get in the $3K range will have a raft of problems. At least with the Saab, you know what they are and after the $2K investment, you'll know what you have. Much better than buying some else's problems. There are no $3K cars that need no work. Deserve no work, yes; need, no.
If you've been looking for the opportunity to get something newer, and are going to invest some decent coin to do this, then you are probably better off putting that $2K towards the new car, not repairs on the old one.
So, if you're going to get a new car 'on the cheap' - and nothing wrong with saving money - fix the one you know. If you want something newer, then say goodbye to the '93. But only if you're going to be buying (1) something newer and in better shape, or (2) that car you've been dreaming of. It doesn't hurt if (1) and (2) are the same. But don't sell the Saab and buy a 94 Toyota for $3200.
Make sense?
