Grinding when braking, but brakes are good?

HI all I am getting a grinding noise when braking (noise is very similar to the noise aoutomatic trans cars make when you release the brake slightly to edge up) in my 1995 9000 Aero 5 speed. Car has 128000 miles but rotors are less than 2 yrs old and pads are only months old. Had brake condition checked by SAAB specialist who also test drove it. Of course no noise when he drove. COuld be new pads with old rotors? Discs were not rusty or grooved though. Mechanic thought he felt a pull on braking like a sticky caliper but seemed OK when checked. Grinding is not loud but changes volume, i.e. sometimes it is worse. Sound almost seems drivetrain/axle related as to where it is coming from and can sound/feel like it is coming from under the car towards the front. Any help is greatly appreciated, i am stumped.
