A quick recap - the problem started out with the car intermittently not starting, and occasionally dying while driving. There was no method to the madness, it'd no start cold, hot and everywhere inbetween. It acted this way for two or three months. During this time, it also became just a bit more sluggish (I didn't even notice it at the time, but in retrospect it's apparent.)

Then, right on a trip from NY to Maine, the no start began getting much more frequent, and if you tried to apply more than half-throttle, it would start to buck and wheeze. We drove the whole way back in limp-home mode (phew.) It was this way for several months, while I was away at college. Then, next time I was home, it simply wouldn't start at all.

And that's where I stand today.

We've changed the plugs, the fuel filter, we tried a different fuel relay. For the longest time I was sure it was the fuel pump, but doing the 14-22 fuse test found the fuel pump humming away. Fuel pump also comes on when cranking the engine. Looking at the plugs, they're a bit black, but not anything that would cause problems.

Where do I go from here? Searched the archives but thought I might get something new with a new topic. There was talk about a way to test electricals by shorting something and seeing if hazards blinked while trying to turn over - can someone elaborate?
