Not too big a problem Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Mon, 7 Mar 2005 05:45:19 In Reply to: Overfilled the oil. Consequences?, Geza in CA, Sun, 6 Mar 2005 17:33:01 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I like running a little above the MAX line normally. Anectodally, keeping the oil level as high a possible is good for timing chain life.
I'm not sure how it could blow a seal. It doesn't really increase oil pressure. The only problem with too much oil is if the oil level reaches the bottom of the crankshaft. Then the crankshaft whips the oil into a froth, and if the froth gets pulled into the oil pump, oil pressure will drop.
You didn't say what year your car was (and I assume it's a four, not a six cylinder). As I remember, for most years, with a filter change the engine took 4.5 quarts - in the last few years, it took a full 5 quarts. So you can't be overfull by more than 1/2 quart, which should be just fine.
Where is the drip onto the exhaust? About all I can think of is from the seal at the base of the dipstick tube. That could run along the back of the engine and drop onto the pipe there. Any leak higher on the engine would have been there before - extra oil shows up at the bottom, not at the top, of the engine.
