There's been a good deal of discussion here in recent days about BPCs, and it seems that the rattle you hear is the (death) rattle of a flip-flop valve inside the BPC, which regulates the flow of pressure between the C and W hoses and the R and W hoses. This little hatch flip flops based on one of two electro-magnetic coils being charged inside the BPC; the coil charged will bring the valve into one position - the other coil brings it over to the other. If that little hatch can flop around on her own, it probably means the onset of the end of the mechanism's useful mechanical life. There is a nice post on cleaning the BPC innards; this helps explain the inner workings of the BPC.
