I have been thinking about the same thing here because I have a cracked windshield that started because of a couple corrosion spots in the corner of the winshield frame causing stress on the glass. I figure if I remove it, I can clean up the rust before the new windshield is installed. Truth be told I think the rust is from a botched windshield replacement 10 years ago but I can't prove it. My guess is they scratched the finish when removing the old windshield and that scratch/scrape led to the corrosion. Hell, it is the only corrosion on the car save for the little bubble forming behind the rear wheel.
The local glass shops here want like $680 to replace my cracked windshield. I don't agree with the other posts that it is not a diy. Anything is a DIY if you have the right tools and knowledge. These folks that work at glass shops aren't craftsmen or genius types. They just have a couple specialzed tools that we don't normally have.
I am seriously thinking of changine my insurance to full coverage for a couple of months to have my insurance company pay for it. I have been paying their michigan premiums on this car for 12 years without a single claim, so ethically I don't feel too bad about it.
Cheers
David
