Oh no, is my transmission gone? Posted by AMG [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
'93 Aero, 5-speed. I got off the highway and suddenly I couldn't shift into 2nd gear reliably. The shifter moves into position but there is no 'gear' there.
As I drove home, I kept trying 2nd gear, and it would catch every once in awhile and I could go a block or two, but it would then pop-out when hitting a small bump in the road.
When it popped out the shifter wouldn't return to neutral position, it would shift very slightly away from 2nd and the car would be in neutral with the shifter basically in the 2nd gear position.
When it popped out but didn't return to neutral position, I could hear the sound of gears almost engaging until I pushed the shifter into the neutral position. When 2nd was engaged I didn't hear any bad sounds like grinding or missing teeth.
The shift coupler looks ok visually. If someone else works the shifter can you see a coupler problem when shifting? Also, even though I did the motor mounts this summer, I'm getting a lot of shifter lash again lately. It seems like either 2nd gear IS stripped partially, but I'm not hearing it, or a coupler/shifter alignment problem. Right?
Does anyone have any experience here? When you strip a gear in the trans there's usually lots of noise when you try to engage that gear, right? Is there a shifter alignment procedure for a '93 car? Any and all help appreciated. Thanks, Aaron
