Steering rod ball joint

Over the weekend I tried to remove the steering rack on the wrecked 94cs n/a in preparation to move it to the 94 cde when the weather gets warmer. The drive train is already removed so it is not too big a job to remove the steering rack. Or so I thought.
I have always used a vertical cylinder hydraulic jack to remove a ball joint. First I loosen the nut in the bottom and remove it. Then I slip the nut back on at least half way or flush with end of the ball joint stem. Next I place the hydraulic jack under the ball joint to jack it up, using the weight of the car to separate the ball from its socket.
I got lazy this time. Instead of removing the nut completely, I loosened it flush with the end and jack the ball joint. I got it to separate allright. But the nut is still tight with the thread so when I tried to turn the nut loose the ball joint rotate with it.
So I am now stuck. I can't either tighten the nut or loosen it. Let this be a lessen to those of you who remove the ball joint this way. Always loosen and remove the nut completely, slip it back on again before placing the jack under to separate the ball from its socket.
My question now is, it there a way to remove the nut now without cutting the stem from the ball?
